Broadcasting


Bea Fry Memorial Scholarship
Current, full time, regularly enrolled undergraduate students. (no incoming Freshmen). Pursuing a course of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Communication, specializing in Broadcasting, Broadcast Journalism, or similar course of study. Demonstrated financial need. Demonstrated dependability, integrity and willingness to work above and beyond what is expected of them.

Dr. Kitatani Broadcast Scholarship
Awarded to an undergraduate in broadcasting to assist them with internship opportunities in large top 5 markets, such as Los Angeles or New York. The award will cover travel and living expenses.

Glenn A. Johnson Scholarship
Awarded to students who demonstrate commitment to quality and integrity in the broadcasting field with preference given to those students in the Broadcast News field.

Keith and Turi Jackson Graduate Fellowship in Mass Media Management
For seniors who have been accepted into the WSU Graduate Program or for graduate students in communication, with emphasis on media management sequence, and specialization in broadcast management.

Mark Kaufman Scholarship
Awarded to a junior, certified in communication, in the area of radio broadcasting, good academic standing and involvement in broadcasting clubs and organizations.

The Neal Robison/Cable 8 Scholarship
This scholarship is named after Cable 8 Production's initial advisor, Neal Robison. This scholarship awarded to a student who has been involved with Cable 8 Productions as a staff and/or executive member for at least one year.

The Puget Sound Broadcasters Association
The Puget Sound Radio Broadcasters Association was formed in 1976 as a way for the Radio stations in the market to join forces to show advertisers the power of Radio. Today, membership includes 29 major radio stations representing seven broadcast companies. Their mission is to promote & support Radio as a primary advertising medium through marketing, education and training. PSRBA is pleased to sponsor a yearly scholarship for a student in the Broadcasting program with Radio focus in the College of Communication.

Ron and Louise Carter Broadcasting
Award Awarded to students demonstrating outstanding performance in and service to the broadcasting program with special consideration given to those who demonstrate a strong work ethic. Financial need may also be a consideration.

Val Limburg Journalism and Broadcast Ethics Scholarship
Awarded to communication majors, based on GPA, extracurricular activities, and students who have taken the media ethics classes and who best exemplifies Val Limburg's commitment to the highest ethical standards in the brief essay on media ethics.

Washington State Association of Broadcasters
Last year, WSAB awarded seven scholarships to WSU Students. One award to the outstanding male Junior, and one to the outstanding female Junior in Broadcasting. Third scholarship awarded to outstanding junior specializing in Broadcast Management. Minorities are encouraged to apply. Selection guidelines include sincere interest in Broadcasting and intent to enter the field professionally, demonstrated talent and potential in broadcasting, high levels of personality and character, scholarship, and need.

John Woodin / KIRO-TV Scholarship
Awarded to deserving broadcast student.  Financial Aid  Restricted by Race, Gender, Color , Ethnicity or National Origin to WSU undergraduate students who have both significant financial need and a special interest in convergence area of TV (computer and broadcast) and the ability to write clearly for the medium.


Communication


Barbara Groce Reilly and Earl F. Reilly, Jr. Scholarship
Barbara Groce Reilly and Earl F. Reilly Jr. are distinguished leaders in the radio and television industries, with careers marked by the pursuit of excellence and numerous prestigious awards.  This scholarship is for students with large market internship opportunities who need financial support in conjunction with their internships.

COM 101 Scholarship
This fund will provide scholarships in varying amounts to students who earn an "A" in Communication 101 during the preceding calendar year. The first year will include fall semester 2003. Along with the scholarship application all applicants will include a written one-page essay on "What I learned in Com 101." A blind review process will be used to select the winning entries.

Diane Ballasiotes Memorial Scholarship
Recipients shall be full-time women students in communication, who, like Diane Ballasiotes, demonstrate outstanding promise as communication professionals and strong personal commitment toward community involvement.

Ellen Abelson Memorial Graduate Fellowship
Awarded to a graduate student and administered by the Dean of College of Liberal Arts.

George and Gladys Dunning Scholarship
For any regularly enrolled Communication pre-majors and majors; attention given to academic performance, need, potential for success in Communication professions.

Horrace and Agnes Keeney Scholarship
This fund will provide scholarships with financial need in the College of Communication.

Jessemey/McCarty Family Scholarship
Awarded to any full-time Communication student. Attention given to active participation in extracurricular activities within the Murrow College.

Joyce Szymanski Cougar Pride Scholarship
Awarded to high achieving students with a burning desire to enter the communication industry as a vocation. Open to all certified Communication majors with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference given to students in their junior year who have been involved in extracurricular activities since entering WSU.

Katie Whitworth Estate Scholarship
Awarded to communication majors. Based on academic performance, career potential or need.

Norma McKinney and Pat Roley Endowed Scholarship in Communication
This scholarship is to be awarded to student who needs help attending WSU to concentrate on their studies to graduate.

R. Anita Busek Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to female full-time undergraduate students in Communication, who show financial need.

The Rose Marie and "Bus" James Endowment Fund
This scholarship is targeted toward students who demonstrate outstanding commitment to a career in a field of Communication with preference given to students who participate in The Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) or veterans of armed forces with an honorable discharge.

Rotary Club of East Portland Richard Ross Memorial Scholarship
The principal of this fund shall be used to award one or more scholarship to WSU students according to the following criteria. Standing sophomore or Junior students intending to major or majoring in the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication. Student must be from the greater Portland area. Students must demonstrate financial need. Previous scholarship recipients are also eligible to apply.

The Scott Family Scholarship in Communication - Deans Scholarship College of Liberal Arts
Awarded to incoming or currently enrolled freshmen, preference given to multicultural students with good academic standing. Freshmen who remain in good academic standing will remain eligible to retain this scholarship up to four years.


Communication Studies


Harold Rock Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to outstanding debater and undergraduate communication major that demonstrates a reasonable level of academic competence. Priority given to students showing potential for growth both as a scholar and as a debater.


Journalism


Journalism Development Fund
For journalism juniors, seniors and graduate students.

Maynard Hicks Scholarship
Awarded to undergraduate pursuing a degree in journalism with demonstrated financial need.

Northwest Automotive Press Association
The Northwest Automotive Press Association is a group of writers mostly composed of journalists who live and work in the Northwest, although there are some out of state members and many members have national venues. Annually, for the last nine years, NWAPA has sponsored and organized a contest to choose the Family Sport Utility Vehicle of the year. The winning vehicle is one that best reflects all the necessary components that makes it especially compatible with our climate and topography. The group has benefited from this program and now wishes to support younger journalists, and possible future members, to reach their career goals through a scholarship for a student at Washington State University.

Pioneer Newspaper Communication Fund
Awarded to current students, preferably those interested in community journalism.

Seattle Times/Blethen Family Minority Scholarship
Awarded to deserving minority students who have demonstrated commitment and promise as future professionals in print journalism or print advertising.

Tri-Cities Herald/News Tribune of Tacoma Scholarship
Awarded to minority journalism students: preference to Hispanic students, Native American students who are enrolled members of recognized tribes. First preference given to students from the Tri-Cities, Tacoma or Ellensburg, then students from the mid-Columbia region, Washington State, the Northwest and the nation. Recipients will work in summer internships at either the Tri-City Herald or Tacoma News Tribune and must participate in programs of the Daily Evergreen.

W. Newland Reilly Memorial Scholarship
For journalism juniors, seniors and graduate students; attention given to financial need.


Public Relations


Bowers Beidleman Scholarship
Awarded to high achieving student with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in Communication classes.  Students must show demonstrated leadership in extracurricular activities on campus, including within the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, since entering WSU, by providing a professor or other WSU faculty member as a reference who has been witness to their scholastic abilities and/or involvement with extracurricular activities.  Students who are majoring in the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations and have a strong desire to enter the communication industry as a vocation.

Jay and Retha Inghram Rockey Scholarship
Awarded to incoming freshmen in good academic standing with an interest in public relations. Preference given to communication majors of Nez Perce descent, then Native American students, followed by minority students, then non-minority students.

Jeri McDonald Endowment Scholarship
The McDonald family established the scholarship in Public Relations to provide financial assistance to students who are pursuing their dreams in the field Jeri loved.

The Thomas E. and Karen A. Hunt Scholarship in Communication
This scholarship is to recognize communication students in good standing of GPA 3.0 or above who demonstrate financial needs and majoring in the Public Relations or journalism sequences.
