Description of Position: The Edward R. Murrow School of Communication at Washington State University in Pullman, WA seeks a full time, 9-month academic year, tenure-track or professional (clinical) advertising faculty at the senior assistant professor or associate professor rank. Appointment begins August 16, 2008.  Responsibilities include teaching classes in media planning and principles of advertising. All applicants must be able to teach two other courses in the candidate’s areas of professional experience and/or research. The successful candidate will also be expected to advise undergraduate and graduate students and serve as a liaison with the professional community. Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience.

Qualifications: All candidates must be able to teach media planning and principles of advertising as well as two other courses in the candidate’s areas of professional experience and/or research. Associate-level tenure-track candidates must possess a Ph.D. before the date of hire, have a resume that indicates nationally recognized research status, have evidence of successful teaching, and have the ability to assume leadership responsibilities in the degree program. Preference will be given to candidates with a research program that complements the Murrow School’s graduate emphases. Tenure-track candidates at the Assistant Professor level will have earned a Ph.D. before the date of hire, have evidence of successful teaching, and be engaged in a productive research agenda. Preference will be given to candidates with the ability to assume leadership responsibilities in the degree program and those with a research program that complements the Murrow School’s graduate emphases. Associate-level professional (clinical) candidates will possess at least 10 years of relevant professional experience in advertising and at minimum a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field. Preference will be given to candidates with a graduate degree in an advertising-related field, demonstrable evidence of successful teaching, and the ability to assume leadership responsibilities in the degree program. Assistant-level professional (clinical) candidates will possess at least five years of relevant professional experience in advertising and at minimum a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field. Preference will be given to candidates with a graduate degree in an advertising-related field, demonstrable evidence of successful teaching, and the ability to assume leadership responsibilities in the degree program. Salaries are competitive and will be commensurate with experience.

School: The Edward R. Murrow School of Communication includes programs in advertising, broadcasting, communication studies, journalism and public relations at the undergraduate level. A strong internship program and support from professionals throughout the Pacific Northwest augment classroom instruction.  Master’s and doctoral program emphases include health communication, intercultural and international communication, media processes and effects, media and society, and organizational communication. The School enjoys state-of-the-art, custom-designed teaching, research and production facilities in a new building which opened in January of 2004.  Washington State University, a member of the Pacific 10 conference, is among the 95 research universities nationwide with a Carnegie classification of “very high research activity.” We are a land-grant institution with an enrollment of 18,000 students.  The Edward R. Murrow School of Communication is the largest academic department among 105 undergraduate programs and over 70 Master’s and 46 Doctoral programs offered through nine colleges and the Graduate School.

Description:  Teach undergraduate basic reporting, editing, public affairs reporting and other related courses.  The School seeks applicants whose experience as a communication professional can build the School’s strong connection to the traditional professional fields, connect our curriculum to the demands of today’s employers, and establish goals for tomorrow.  We seek a person who will help develop and teach a curriculum that emphasizes flexibility and versatility and focuses on skills, principles and practices that enable communicators to disseminate messages effectively in a rapidly changing, digital communications arena.  This faculty member will teach three courses per semester and have a service and outreach responsibility.

Required qualifications:  Minimum five years professional experience in print and/or online journalism; master’s degree in communication or related field; the ability to teach in relevant courses.

Preferred qualifications:  Significant professional experience; experience working across media platforms; college-level teaching experience in journalism; demonstrated ability to interact with professional journalism community and other outside constituents as appropriate.
